Living in Issaquah

Mountains, trails and salmon

The Issaquah Alps surround the city on three sides: Cougar Mountain to the west, Squak Mountain to the south and Tiger Mountain to the southeast, where paragliders launch from Poo Poo Point. Downtown, the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery on Issaquah Creek dates to 1936, and the city celebrates the fall salmon run each October with Salmon Days.

Schools

The Issaquah School District serves the city and surrounding area, with about 28 schools. Attendance areas change, so always confirm a specific address with the district's school locator.

Getting around

I-90 runs through town, putting Bellevue and Seattle within a short drive, and the Issaquah Highlands Park and Ride offers transit service toward both. The Issaquah Highlands neighborhood is also home to Swedish Issaquah, a full-service hospital that opened in 2011.

A little history

Issaquah started as Squak, a mining town serving the mountains nearby, and was briefly renamed Gilman for railroad builder Daniel Hunt Gilman before the name Issaquah stuck. It incorporated on April 29, 1892, and lumber took over as the mines played out. Costco moved its headquarters here in 1996. Today Issaquah is home to about 41,600 people (Washington OFM, April 1, 2026 estimate).
