Rainier Beach is a set of neighborhoods in Seattle, Washington that are mostly residential. Neighborhood boundaries are informal and sometimes overlapping in Seattle; formal designations have not existed since 1910. Also called Atlantic City, Rainier Beach can include Dunlap, Pritchard Island, and Rainier View neighborhoods. The neighborhood is located in the far southeastern corner of the city along Lake Washington. Its primary arterials are Rainier and Renton Avenues South (northwest- and southeast-bound). Rainier Beach blends with the Rainier Valley neighborhood of Dunlap (also called Othello) on the north. On the east is Lake Washington, and the South Beacon Hill neighborhood lies to the west. South of Rainier Beach is Rainier View, bound by South Bangor Street on the north and the city boundary on its south, east, and west. The Lakeridge and Skyway neighborhoods of unincorporated King County lie to the southeast and southwest, respectively, of Rainier View. The city of Tukwila abuts Rainier View on the west. With some of the most affordable lakefront and water view homes in Seattle, Rainier Beach is an attractive option for those seeking moderately priced waterfront homes. On good days, Mount Rainier is visible from several locations hence the name.
Just South of Seward Park, Rainier Beach's East end is mostly residential, with Rainier Ave running along the shoreline. Rainier Beach offers several parks along the waterfront making it one of the more accessible public access points on Lake Washington. This is a very diverse neighborhood, which often hosts many events like the International Music and Arts Festival, Big Day of Play, Community cleanup days, and the Summer Streets Block Party and Heritage Parade. The commercial district along Rainier Ave. S can get busy but once off this main road, the side streets are generally quiet. The best attractions here involve nature’s splendor. Beer Shiva Park and Pritchard Island Beach Park fuse together and provide two great sunbathing sites. Farther south is Lakeridge Park a 35 acre wooded area with flowing water, hiking trails, and shade galore. At the top of the hill in the center of Rainier Beach lies the Kubota Garden, a historical site and magnificent display of landscape architecture. Paths meander among native plants, crossing over small streams with footbridges or stepping-stones.
