Newcastle's trail system connects to King County's Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park just to the east, and Lake Boren Park sits near the city center. The Golf Club at Newcastle covers about 350 acres with two 18-hole courses, Coal Creek and China Creek.
Newcastle is split between two districts. Much of the city is in the Issaquah School District, which includes Newcastle Elementary, Cougar Mountain Middle School and Liberty High School; other areas are in the Renton School District, served by Hazen High School. Always confirm a specific address with the district's school locator.
I-405 runs along the city's western edge, putting Bellevue and Renton a short drive away, and I-90 is a few minutes north.
Coal was discovered along Coal Creek in 1863, and Newcastle grew into one of King County's early mining towns; the Seattle and Walla Walla Railroad reached it in 1878 as the county's first railroad. The mine closed in 1963 after producing more than 13 million tons of coal. Newcastle incorporated as a city on September 30, 1994, and today is home to about 13,900 people (Washington OFM, April 1, 2026 estimate).
