Living in Seattle

Neighborhoods, hills and water

Seattle is often said to sit on seven hills, among them Capitol Hill, First Hill, Queen Anne, Magnolia, Beacon Hill and West Seattle, and its neighborhoods are wrapped by water: Puget Sound to the west, Lake Washington to the east and Lake Union in the middle, linked to the Sound by the Lake Washington Ship Canal. Discovery Park, on the former Fort Lawton in Magnolia, is the city's largest park at 534 acres, with almost 12 miles of trails.

Schools

Seattle Public Schools is the largest public school district in Washington, with about 51,500 students in more than 100 schools. Attendance areas vary by address, so always confirm a specific home with the district's school locator.

Getting around

I-5 runs north-south through the city and SR 99 runs along the waterfront and Aurora Avenue. Sound Transit's 1 Line light rail connects Seattle with Sea-Tac Airport to the south and Shoreline and Lynnwood to the north, and the 2 Line began crossing Lake Washington to Bellevue and Redmond on March 28, 2026. Washington State Ferries sail from the downtown waterfront and West Seattle.

A little history

Seattle is named for Chief Seattle, a leader of the Duwamish and Suquamish peoples. It incorporated as a city on December 2, 1869, rebuilt after the Great Seattle Fire of 1889, boomed as the supply port for the Klondike Gold Rush after 1897, and built the Space Needle for the 1962 World's Fair. Today Seattle is home to about 823,400 people (Washington OFM, April 1, 2026 estimate).
