Parks and waterfront

The island is about six miles long and up to four miles wide. Luther Burbank Park covers about 77 acres with roughly three-quarters of a mile of Lake Washington waterfront, and Pioneer Park's 113 acres of forest are laced with hiking, biking and equestrian trails.

Schools

The Mercer Island School District serves the whole island, with four elementary schools, Islander Middle School and Mercer Island High School.

Getting around

I-90 crosses the island, with floating bridges west to Seattle and the East Channel Bridge to Bellevue. Mercer Island's light rail station opened on March 28, 2026, putting the island on Sound Transit's 2 Line between Seattle and the Eastside.

A little history

The island was named for Seattle's Mercer family by 1860. A bridge to the Eastside opened in 1923, and the Lacey V. Murrow floating bridge to Seattle followed in 1940. The City of Mercer Island incorporated in 1960 and merged with the separately incorporated Town of Mercer Island business district in 1970. Today about 25,900 people live on the island (Washington OFM, April 1, 2026 estimate).
